Mass priest furloughed amid misconduct investigation

A Massachusetts priest has been placed on administrative leave as he faces allegations of misconduct. The Diocese of Fall River said Reverend Rodney E. Thibault of Lord Parish Transfiguration in North Attleborough was placed on leave from priestly ministry by Bishop Edgar M. da Cunha a few weeks ago. According to the diocese, the alleged misconduct is “inconsistent with ministerial standards of behavior” and directly violates the code of conduct for priests in the Diocese of Fall River. These three parishes were merged into one in January 2020 to form the parish of the Transfiguration of the Lord. The Bishop announced that Reverend Michael Ciryak will serve as the temporary administrator of the Lord’s Transfiguration Parish. Thibault is also listed as principal of Saint Mary-Sacred Heart School, a Catholic school that serves approximately 10 parishes with 225 students in kindergarten through eighth grade. The diocese did not specify how the decision to furlough Thibault would affect his status as school principal.

The parishioners of the parish of the Transfiguration of the Lord were informed that Thibault had been placed on leave by a message from the bishop, which was read to them during masses held on the weekend of August 6-7.

“In his communication, Bishop da Cunha acknowledged how ‘painful’ this turn of events is for the parishioners of the parish and assured them of his prayers during this difficult time,” reads an August 7 statement from the Fall River Diocese.
