Mangaluru, March 15: The annual catechism day was celebrated in a meaningful way on Sunday, March 13, with the Eucharistic celebration at 9:30 a.m. Father William Menezes, parish priest, and Father Lawrence Cutinha, assistant to the parish priest, concelebrated the Holy Eucharist. In his homily, he emphasized the importance of the catechism in building up and strengthening faith in his own life. He stressed that the life of every child must be built on the solid foundation of the teachings of Christ and the Word of God. During the Holy Mass, prayers of thanksgiving were offered to the Triune God for granting blessing throughout the year. The liturgy was led by the children and all took an active part in the Eucharistic banquet.

The second part of the celebration took place in the parish hall. At 11:00 a.m., the students presented a variety of short cultural programs. Children from different grades presented various value-based programs to the audience. Salony D’Souza and Master Deon Melrick accompanied the entire cultural program. Melina Crasta welcomed the dignitaries. Mahima Saldanha shared her experience as a catechism student. The Sunday Catechism coordinator Sr. Lorna presented a brief annual report of the catechism classes. Father William Menezes, parish priest, conveyed the message to parents and congregation regarding the importance of faith and the Gospel values that should be instilled in children. He also insisted on the involvement of more lay people for the teaching of catechism in the different classes. He thanked all the catechism teachers for their selfless service to the church. Father Lawrence Cutinha, Noel Pinto the vice-president and Lolina D’Souza the secretary of the parish pastoral council were present for the program. Finally, prizes were awarded to the children for their good results in the catechism exams. Aron Vas proposes a vote of thanks. Refreshments were served to the children.

To conclude, we would like to add that the catechism classes this year were more interesting and the children were enthusiastic to participate actively in all the activities. The initiatives taken by parish priests and catechism teachers have been effective in building a solid base of Christian faith in the lives of children.
