“It’s overwhelming”: the anguish of a priest after churches were ransacked by vandals

The barricaded windows are the result of repeated attacks on the offices and center which are part of St Peter & St John’s Catholic Church in Camberley.

The problems started in the summer, with young people finding themselves in the field behind the building. There were several break-ins with broken windows, a demolished shed and a vandalized television.

Even the CCTV cameras installed to catch vandals have been stolen.

Father Paul Turner said, “We had a lot of break-ins, a lot of broken windows and people climbing up to the roof and going to the ward office. Lots of nuisance really.

“It has been going on for about six months. We have a lot of young people coming to sit here and it is great really. But I think the problem is that other people hear about it and congregate here. “

Some of the damage is believed to have been caused by young people from a local estate and now Surrey Police are carrying out more patrols and more security cameras are installed.

Anyone with information on these incidents is encouraged to contact the police on 101.
