Everyone seems to bemoan the division in our society today – in politics, culture, schools, even within our beloved Church.
One thing that seems to unite all parties is the concern that our world has lost a fundamental respect for life. Left and right, Democrat and Republican, East and West, all over the world, all seem to agree.

-We mourn the fate of refugees and immigrants at the border, frightened, worried, desperate, caught between two worlds, sometimes treated as property instead of human beings created in the image and likeness of God;
-We are moved by the scene in Afghanistan with people injured, injured and even killed in desperate attempts to escape, falling like cargo from evacuation planes;
-We are still shaken by memories of COVID, with questions still rife about our seniors crammed into unprepared retirement homes without proper care, the lives of frail seniors treated miserably;
-The violence in our streets makes us sick daily, with innocent little children and unsuspecting victims killed by callous killers in car shootings, waiting for a train, or murdered for a cell phone;
-What about the murder of George Floyd, and the carnage that followed in our urban streets, which continues to scare us;
-The increase in suicides, in particular among our young people, of people in crisis pressed by an unknown agony to commit suicide;
-We are afraid to turn on TV or social media, afraid of the news of another mass shooting. . .
I could go on, but something tells me we all agree: human life is now treated as useless, worthless, disposable.

Pope Francis, as usual, tagged it: we live in a “throwaway culture”. Society tells us that life is fine, observes the Holy Father, as long as it is useful, productive, not a challenge or an inconvenience. As he vigorously declares, no, all life counts, all life is sacred, whatever conditions might threaten it.
Where will it all end, we ask?
I propose that this will not end until we stop the allegedly untouchable radical abortion license that seems to have captivated part of our society. As Mother Teresa wrote: “We should not be surprised when we hear of murder, murders, wars, hatred. If a mother can kill her own child, what else is there besides killing each other?
Think about it: if the fragile life of an innocent baby in its mother’s womb – which nature protects as the safest place in the world – can be interrupted, who is safe? If conveniences, “choices” or “my rights” can take precedence over the baby’s life in the womb, what human life is not at risk?

When the law allows the destruction of vulnerable lives, compels healthcare workers to do so against their conscience, and demands that our tax dollars subsidize it, what message do we give about human dignity and sanctity? of life ?
When these powerful forces driving the abortion agenda will not allow any thoughtful consideration of a reasonable limit on the right to take the little life of an unborn child, even up to the time of birth, where do we go? ?
Robert Kennedy noted that the health and moral fiber of society is measured by how we protect the poorest and most vulnerable. Who is more fragile and unable to defend himself than the little one in his mother’s womb? Sucking this baby out of the womb, dismembering it or poisoning it, is, as Pope Francis describes it, like hiring a “hitman” to murder a victim.

I recently listened to some of our legislators describe the terrible dilemma they went through when they found out they were pregnant. They described the response they chose to abort their baby. They spoke in frightening but moving ways to defend their choice.
But, I ask: who is speaking on behalf of the helpless and helpless baby?
Well we have to! Women and men of all faiths, or none, since abortion is not primarily a religious issue, but a civil rights issue, unite to speak out; the unconditional and unchallenged “right” to abortion is inhuman, violent and contrary to human rights.
As with other human rights issues, it is essential that there is equal justice under the law for the baby.
So, while we are mobilizing for equal protection of the law for babies, let us also mobilize around women tempted to end the life of their baby, by offering them care, compassion, support, appropriate medical care, alternatives like adoption, and a culture that protects babies. and mothers before and after birth.

Ask again: when will all this cringe-worthy violence and contempt for life end?
The first step must be the end of the abortion.
