Grand Reception Given to Cardinal Poola Anthony in Hyderabad – The New Indian Express

HYDERABAD: Cardinal Poola Anthony arrived in Hyderabad on Sunday morning from Vatican City for a grand reception hosted by the Congregation of the Fathers at Shamshabad Airport. He was accompanied to his residence by priests and members of the clergy, where he met his relatives and supporters. Previously, the Archdiocese of Hyderabad had asked those who came to congratulate the cardinal to present him with live plants, instead of bouquets of flowers.

In the evening, Cardinal Anthony was taken in a ceremonial procession to the cathedral from Gunfoundry. He was surrounded by bishops and church officials dressed in traditional Roman Catholic attire. Spiritual and devotional Christian songs and dances were performed.

He celebrated his first thanksgiving mass as cardinal in St Joseph’s Cathedral, Gunfoundary, at 5 p.m. with the general public as well as the church ministry. Hundreds of believers gathered in the church for prayer. The Cardinal recited verses from the Holy Bible and blessed the faithful. He wore a distinctive red outfit and was called “Eminence”, which means princes of the church.

Father Victor Emmanuel, Procurator and Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Hyderabad, said there will be another grand facilitation ceremony on September 15 at which many bishops, priests and fathers from the Twin Cities as well as across the country Will be present.

Archbishop Anthony is the first Telugu priest in the history of the Catholic Church to be made a cardinal. He was installed as a cardinal by Pope Francis on August 27. He will continue as Archbishop of Hyderabad while exercising his functions and responsibilities to the Pope.

He is elected a member of the Sacred College of Cardinals, whose duties include electing the pope, acting as his chief advisers, and assisting in the government of the Roman Catholic Church throughout the world.
