KOCHI: The Syro-Catholic Liturgical Forum, a body of priests from various dioceses of the Syro-Malabar Church, urged the Synod to bring peace by restoring the Mass to the people. The call was made by the forum following the ongoing Synod at Mount St Thomas in Kakkanad. The forum held a meeting on Tuesday to discuss the situation in the dioceses after the implementation of the Uniform Holy Mass. Priests and laity from the Diocese of Irinjalakuda and the Archdioceses of Thrissur and Ernakulam-Angamaly took part in the meeting held in Irinjalakuda.

The forum assessed that the “forced” implementation of the Uniform Holy Mass has paved the way for conflict in various dioceses. In addition, the meeting in the hall organized by the Vicar of Kodakkara St Joseph’s Church, Father Davis Kallingal, witnessed a ruckus. According to the participants, the meeting started at 10:30 a.m. An hour later, 12 men claiming to be parishioners create a row and “threaten” the lay representatives. Following this, the place of the meeting had to be moved to a church in Chalakudy.

“This is only one such incident that has occurred recently. Many such issues are occurring in various churches which are obligated to implement the Uniform Holy Mass. Peaceful gatherings are disrupted,” said a priest belonging to the forum.

“The Uniform Holy Mass that was introduced to unify the Church has actually disrupted peace and unity in the Church,” the forum assessed. He also criticized the way priests are forced to lead Mass facing the altar. “The forum drew Synod’s attention to the events unfolding in various churches and urged its intervention,” forum organizer Fr. John Ayyankanayil said.
